寫作黃金守則~這真是太Over了,惱人的贅字語病

我的寫作黃金守則之前分享了很多如何將句子變得更簡潔的方式

我們常掛在口中的那句「喔,這真是太Over了
則是本世紀在台灣最氾濫的贅字語病之一。
我之前上課有跟同學說,Over這個字本身就有「太」的意思
所以不用再說「太」

本周來探討的是已經氾濫成災的英文贅字

下面五個是非題,你的答案會是...

1. 提款機的英文你會說ATM machine嗎?

2. 提前計畫事情是很重要的 We need to plan everything in advance. 這句英文很OK

3. 絕對必要的這句話的英文是It's absolutely necessary.

4.周年慶特賣的英文是Annual anniversary sale.

5. 老王是個禿頭 Mr. Wang is bald-headed. 

如果上面五題你都回答YES,那麼你可能已經出現贅字症候群
其實別沮喪
很多老外也有這個毛病,就連托福的出題也難避免
而且頻率之高令人難以想像
(這好比很多台灣濫用太Over是一樣的)

我這幾年教英文贅字蟲抓了不少

今天先分享第一部分

大家要記得

要記得少即是多 Less IS more.
贅字不要用,養成習慣你的寫作就有救啦!!!
(上面那個是錯誤示範,記得驚嘆號不要打三次,一次就好了)

最後,上面那五題的贅字在哪裡?
我們來很快地看一下

ATMAutomatic Teller Machine的縮寫,看見了沒?M這個字母就已經有machine的意思了

To plan something就已經有提前計畫的意思了,所以不用再說in advance. 

It's absolutely necessary. 一樣的道理,necessary 這個字
本身就已經包含了absolute(一定/絕對)所以不用加強形容

Annual Anniversary這句說法的Annual 根本不需要,因為anniversary 就有周年的意思啦

Bald-headed不需要再加這個字了,難道無毛問題會出現在膝蓋上嗎?
加上headed的形容其實是多此一舉啊!



贅字語病範例
(括號內的紫色字為贅字)
這樣說就夠了

例句: He reminded me that it’s necessary/necessary to read through the book before jumping to an conclusion.

例句:
1. Thorough planning/warning is needed before we announce our plans to the public.
2. These teenagers died because they didn’t listen to the old man’s warning.
3. I need to preview this chapter before class starts.
4. You can just stop by anytime you want. No reservations needed.
add (an additional)/add (up)/(added) bonus
To add/ Add/Bonus.
例句:
1.     I need to add another cup of water to the cake batter.
2.     I was being told that every employee would get a bonus at the end of the year.
(all-time) record

例句: The athlete cut a dash by setting another record yesterday.(cut a dash是出鋒頭的意思)

例句: After I got laid off I had no choice but to move back home.

1.     After he hung up the phone, my mind went blank for a moment.
2.     Just type in the title and you’ll find a summary written for each book.
