我們常掛在口中的那句「喔,這真是太Over了」
則是本世紀在台灣最氾濫的贅字語病之一。
我之前上課有跟同學說,Over這個字本身就有「太」的意思
所以不用再說「太」
本周來探討的是已經氾濫成災的英文贅字

下面五個是非題,你的答案會是...
1. 提款機的英文你會說ATM machine嗎?
2. 提前計畫事情是很重要的 We need to plan everything in advance. 這句英文很OK
3. 絕對必要的這句話的英文是It's absolutely necessary.
4.周年慶特賣的英文是Annual anniversary sale.
5. 老王是個禿頭 Mr. Wang is bald-headed.
如果上面五題你都回答YES,那麼你可能已經出現贅字症候群囉
其實別沮喪
很多老外也有這個毛病,就連托福的出題也難避免
而且頻率之高令人難以想像
(這好比很多台灣濫用太Over是一樣的)

最後,上面那五題的贅字在哪裡?
我們來很快地看一下
ATM 是Automatic Teller Machine的縮寫,看見了沒?M這個字母就已經有machine的意思了
To plan something就已經有提前計畫的意思了,所以不用再說in advance.
It's absolutely necessary. 一樣的道理,necessary 這個字
本身就已經包含了absolute(一定/絕對)所以不用加強形容
Annual Anniversary這句說法的Annual 根本不需要,因為anniversary 就有周年的意思啦
Bald-headed不需要再加頭這個字了,難道無毛問題會出現在膝蓋上嗎?
加上headed的形容其實是多此一舉啊!
